Santa Fe Lion paperweight.  In the early 1880’s there was a lot of British capital in the Santa Fe and as a gesture of friendship the Santa Fe cast these brass and iron paperweights in the form of the lion-at-ease. Carloads of these were made and ready for distribution. This all came to the notice of Populist Leaders, and being 100% Americans, they wanted no British interference with anything in the Midwest. The Santa Fe prudently warehoused the paperweights and thousands of them were melted.  Occasionally some of these souvenirs would be shipped around to station agents for their own use.  Nothing says Western Railroad Americana like a British inspired paperweight that us Americans refused to use!!  God Bless America!!
